Led by the District’s only board-certified Criticalists, Dr. Janine Calabro and Dr. Samantha Hart, our staff is highly skilled in the management of veterinary emergencies and critical cases. Friendship’s Criticalists go through rigorous ACVECC-approved residency training and develop advanced expertise in assessing and treating critically ill patients. Our experienced team is ready to intervene as quickly as needed to assure the highest likelihood of successful outcomes.

Our Specialists Are Available When You Need Them Most
Friendship’s criticalists, internists, surgeons, oncologists, neurologists and other specialized doctors are ready to intervene as quickly as needed.
Friendship surgeons are always on call. Our expert team, overseen by board-certified surgical specialist and Chief of Surgery Dr. Mathieu Glassman, uses the most advanced techniques and equipment, as well as full monitoring during anesthesia. Friendship’s full-time anesthesiologist, Dr. Nicole Karrasch, is also on hand for the clinical management of anesthetized patients and pain management.

Our critically ill patients are the most closely monitored in our hospital. Patients admitted to our 24/7 intensive care unit are stabilized, monitored, diagnosed, and treated by staff with advanced training using state-of-the-art equipment.

Meet the Chief
Janine Calabro, DVM, DACVECC, Chief of Emergency and Critical Care
Dr. Calabro is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Veterinary medicine was a second career for Dr. Calabro, who worked in mammary carcinogensis and environmental reproductive toxicology research at Tufts University School of Medicine before she matriculated at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. She received her DVM and a Certificate in International Veterinary Medicine from Tufts in 2008, completed an internship at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital of the ASPCA in 2009, and then completed a residency in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at The Animal Medical Center in 2012.
By maintaining a veterinarian-staffed hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, we can react to changes in your companion’s condition faster and more precisely. This level of intervention is practiced for both short-term and extended hospital stays. Closer monitoring and responsive care results in less discomfort, facilitates healing, and increases the likelihood of successful outcomes.
