Friendship Surgical Specialists (FSS) is located in Friendship Hospital for Animals and is the only veterinary surgical specialist group in Washington, DC. Led by board-certified surgeons’ Dr. Mathieu Glassman and Dr. Dirsko von Pfeil, FSS provides the finest orthopedic and soft tissue surgery ensuring the highest likelihood of favorable outcomes. FSS works with’ The Oncology Service at Friendship Hospital for Animals to provide boarded surgical care for cancer patients. We will also work with you to provide outstanding pre- and post-surgery care.
FSS operates Mondays through Saturday and offers a wide variety of advanced surgeries—orthopedic, soft tissue, and emergency dog and cat surgery.

Meet our Surgical Specalists
Mathieu Glassman, VMD, DACVS, Chief of Surgery
A native of Washington, DC, Dr. Glassman joined the Friendship Hospital for Animals team in 2011. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (2004), Dr. Glassman completed a small animal internship at The Ohio State University (2005), a surgical internship in Hollywood, Florida (2006), and a residency in small animal surgery at the University of Georgia (2010). He became a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2011 and worked as a clinical orthopedic instructor at the University of Georgia before joining Friendship.
Dr. Glassman specializes in orthopedic and soft tissue specialty surgery, with special interests in joint surgery, fracture management with internal plate fixation and external skeletal fixation, emergency surgeries, and advanced wound management and reconstructive surgery.
Dirsko von Pfeil, Dr.med.vet, DVM, DACVS, DECVS
After studying veterinary medicine in Germany, France and Sweden Dr. von Pfeil graduated from Berlin in 2001 before being selected for an internship at Kansas State University (KSU). This was followed by the American DVM, a surgery residency and fellowship at Michigan State University (MSU) (resident of the year, elected by the MSU class 2006), leading to double-board certification with the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons in 2008. He then worked as professor in surgery at KSU and at veterinary referral centers in Alaska and Virginia before joining Friendship Surgical Specialists in 2015.
Dr. von Pfeil is a highly regarded leader in the advancement of minimally invasive surgery and challenging surgical procedures. In addition to his expertise in soft tissue reconstruction, fraction repair and fluroscopically-guided procedures, Dr. von Pfeil has successfully completed thorascopic lung lobectomies and pericardectomies, and cardiac pacemaker implantations.
