Meet our Doctors

Dirsko von Pfeil, Dr.med.vet, DVM, DACVS, DECVS, DACVSMR

Orthopedic, Soft Tissue Specialty and Oncologic Surgeon

Orthopedic & Specialty Surgery, Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine

Adjunct Professor: Michigan State University
Visiting Scientist: University of Georgia, Athens

Dr. von Pfeil graduated from Berlin, Germany, in 2001 before being selected for an internship at Kansas State University (KSU). This was followed by the American DVM, a surgery residency and fellowship at Michigan State University (MSU) (resident of the year, elected by the MSU class 2006), leading to double-board certification with the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons in 2008. He then worked as a professor in surgery at KSU and at referral centers in AK and VA, before joining Friendship in 2015. Following years of sports medicine related work, he earned his third board-certification in 2016 with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Dr. von Pfeil has served as an adjunct professor at MSU since 2009, is on the board of referees for several international veterinary journals since 2011 and volunteers as secretary of the D.C. Veterinary Medical Association. He is a member of numerous Veterinary Associations including AAHA, ACVS, ECVS, ACVSMR, VOS, VSSO and more.

Clinical Areas of Interest

Dr. von Pfeil has been the driving force at the clinics he worked at in the past and at Friendship to advance minimally invasive surgery (arthroscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, minimally invasive fracture repair using fluoroscopy). Further clinical accomplishments during his career include successful completion of challenging surgical procedures, such as complicated fracture repairs, total hip replacements, subcutaneous ureteral bypass surgeries, stent placements, thoracoscopic lung lobectomies and pericardectomies, major reconstructive soft tissue surgeries, advanced laparoscopic procedures, oncological procedures including cardiac tumor removals, and cardiac pacemaker implantations.

Dr. von Pfeil’s dissertation on implant biomechanics provided the basis for the development of the first angle-stable interlocking nail (I-LOC) in veterinary and human medicine, used for minimally invasive fracture repair today. He has developed, presented and published modifications to surgical techniques such as minimally invasive percutaneous fracture repair, less invasive laryngeal paralysis surgery, and salivary mucocele surgeries. Regarding the TPLO procedure to treat cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR), he wrote numerous landmark publications and performed a worldwide survey on the best method to treat CCLR. In addition, he has made over 30 other contributions to the veterinary literature.

In cooperation with multiple academic and private institutions Dr. von Pfeil continues to be actively involved in clinical research and enjoys working together with colleagues, interns, residents or post-graduate students (MS or PhD) on scientific studies. He frequently speaks on various topics in small animal surgery at national and international meetings. Since 2007 Dr. von Pfeil has been involved in multiple sled dog races across Alaska. He was honored to receive the “Golden Stethoscope Award” during the Iditarod Sled Dog Race 2013. He has authored papers in this field, and is the main editor of the “Musher and Veterinary Handbook.”

Why Do You Work at Friendship?

Friendship Hospital for Animals is by far the most advanced and forward looking high end and state of the art small animal hospital I have worked at in my entire career. The clinic’s administrative team provides the best support I ever had. They ensure to keep employees happy and enforce the team of veterinarians to treat each animal as if it was their own pet. The emphasis is on offering the best care for each patient, and not to increase the clinic’s revenue. While one would think this to be normal for every veterinary clinic, reality of a market driven business is different. In addition, academic support is strong, and thus numerous scientific publications have been and are being produced by the Friendship veterinarians.  Friendship is an outstanding place to work in regards to patient care, customer service, team spirit, team support, and dedication to the best and highest level of veterinary medicine possible. Not surprisingly, Friendship is one of the few major clinics to offer numerous highly qualified specialists in nearly each specialty field of veterinary medicine, including a board-certified anesthesiologist, a dialysis service, board certified radiologists (offering MRI, CT, ultrasound), a board-certified neurologist, multiple internists, criticalists, surgeons and more.
