Feeding Dogs Human Food

Hello:

I've done some research on the Internet and have discovered that there are alarming stories out there about commercial dog foods. Some authors claim that most commercial dog food is not only deleterious to pet health but can actually increase early mortality. I also observe that if the dog is eating the same food day in and day out over a number of years and does die young, let's say from deterioration owing to these foods, who ever takes the blame? Some of these stories claim that cats and dogs could live far longer than suggested by mortality rates; a dog, for instance, expected these days to live only fifteen years maximum (and they say this is because of commercial dog food) would live to be five or seven years older if fed properly handled and proportioned human food, that is, natural FRESH food--not processed, not filled and not full of by products. Why not then feed the dog ground meat without hormones or steroids that is lean, high grade and cooked, vegetables such as carrots or peas and rice? I was seriously alarmed by what I read and noted that I had a dog Nana who ate what was touted to be great nutritional value dog food who had a host of health problems and died I think young at age 15. I think this needs further study. What do you say?

 In faith.

There is a lot of information on the internet about pet food nutrition, some good, some misleading. We here at Friendship have found that commercial diets that are complete and balanced are good diets to feed a pet. We've seen no harmful effects that we know of from feeding commercial diets. On the other hand, we have seen many problems due to unbalanced home cooked meals.

However, if you would like to feed a homemade cooked diet, I would recommend doing it correctly and contacting a boarded veterinary nutritionist. This person is a veterinarian, who has special training in pet nutrition and is specialty boarded in nutrition. There are many available; the one we recommend is Dr Rebecca Remillard. Her web site is www.petdiets.com. She will formulate a balanced homemade diet for a fee. Most research has shown that most homemade diets are not balanced. The web site also has a great Q & A section. You can post a question or there are many questions on it that address feeding commercial foods vs. homemade diets. We like this web site because she is completely unbiased, she does not work for or take any money from any pet food companies.
