Community Service and the Brudder Sullivan Fund
As the largest animal health care provider in the metropolitan area, Friendship recognizes that we have a special responsibility to the community beyond our mission to provide quality health care for pets.

As a member of the Washington business and animal health-care community for over 60 years, Friendship is committed to helping make our community a better place to live. Friendship has developed or participates in a number of programs to support our community.

Friendship Fund for Humane Education
Unfortunately, vicious cruelty and ignorant neglect toward animals are terrible and constant truths in our city. The most effective prevention of animal cruelty is education. The Friendship Fund for Humane Education was established in 1998 to support the efforts of the Washington Humane Society (WHS) in educating children regarding the proper treatment of animals. Friendship Hospital for Animals matches donations to the WHS up to $50,000 in aggregate. In the history of the Fund, we have never failed to provide the full matching funds thanks to the generosity of our clients. Friendship Hospital for Animals and the Washington Humane Society’s hope to produce a new generation of animal protectors and advocates.

Donations can be made directly to the WHS (www.washhumane.org). Just write “Friendship Fund” in the memo section of your check and Friendship will match your donation!

Community Service Leave
Friendship provides all staff members employed for at least one year with paid leave so that they have an opportunity to “give back” to the community. Friendship provides six paid days of community service leave each year to qualified staff members. Staff members may use the leave for the community service of their choice. Friendship employees have used their leave to work for schools and churches and animal humane organizations. One staff member saved up his leave to go to South Africa with his church to help rebuild an impoverished community there.

Following the Hurricane Katrina disaster, Friendship staff members used their community service leave to go to the disaster area to aid in the animal shelters. Veterinarians and Friendship managers spent time organizing the shelter and caring for the thousands of lost and abandoned pets.

Discounted Veterinary Services
Friendship recognizes the critical animal welfare services provided to the community by the Washington Humane Society (WHS) and the Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL). The staffs of WHS and WARL work tirelessly to provide care and protection to animals across our city. Friendship works closely with both organizations to provide quality health care to animals in need 24-hours every day. In support of these efforts, Friendship discounts all professional services to WHS and WARL. Veterinarians and staff frequently devote their own personal time to the care of animals presented by WHS and WARL.

Brudder Sullivan Fund
The Brudder Sullivan Fund is an in-hospital fund that supports pet owners who might not be in a position to pay for care at Friendship. The Brudder Sullivan Fund was begun at Friendship in 1988. Monies in the fund support the treatment of animals at Friendship who might otherwise go untreated. Members of the Friendship staff and one lay person make up an advisory group which determines the distributions of funds. The Brudder Sullivan Fund is supported by donations from Friendship itself and from clients. The Brudder Sullivan Fund is not a 501-c3 non-profit entity. Gifts to the Fund are not deductible for tax purposes. The Fund is an informal way for Friendship and supporters to help animals and pet-owners in need here at the hospital.

Council of Governments Veterinary Team Award
On February 25, 2005, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) presented Friendship with its first ever Veterinary Team Award for contributions to Animal Services in the metropolitan area. The award recognized our long association with the Washington Humane Society, our team work during “spay days,” and other contributions to community animal welfare. We are very proud of the award and we thank our many team members and clients who made it possible.
